DC Comics — the comic book publisher that brought us Superman, Batman and Robin, Batgirl, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, and The Flash — has announced that one of its well-known superheroes is gay.
Originally, the company had planned to create a new, gay superhero. But it was revealed Sunday at the Kapow! Comic Convention that one of the existing characters will be portrayed as a homosexual in an upcoming issue. DC Comics has disclosed that the character will be an iconic male superhero.
“One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June,” Courtney Simmons, DC Entertainment’s senior vice president of publicity, told ABC News.
Whichever superhero DC Comics has in mind, it won’t be the comic book publisher’s first LGBT character. DC Comics already has a gay couple, Midnighter and Apollo; two lesbians, Batwoman and Renee Montoya; and a bisexual, Voodoo.
Marvel Comics has followed suit. In an issue due out June 20, Jean-Paul Beaubier will marry his boyfriend, Kyle Jinadu — taking their interracial relationship to the next level.
“DC and (archrival) Marvel are recognizing that there is an LGBT audience that has been reading their comics for years. When creating these fictional worlds it’s important to show the full diversity,” said Matt Kane, associate director of entertainment and media for GLAAD. GLAAD, an organization that advocates LGBT issues, awarded DC Comics an Outstanding Comic Book award for its portrayal of Batwoman.
The announcement has sparked much speculation as to who will be coming out of the closet (or perhaps who will be coming out of the phone booth or Batcave) in June. (read more)
